VR-platform for developing and training on casting installations

Virtual models (VR-models) can be used to qualify and train the operating personnel on casting installations. These training methods focus on creating virtual models of casting machines where their composition, function and operation can be tested and on their web based use at distributed production sites. A Virtual Reality Platform for creating training scenarios developed in the Fraunhofer Institute is the basis for the elaboration of these training methods. In a selected example this technique was used in order to illustrate the functioning of a typical casting machine such as the coreless induction furnace and prepare it for virtual training sessions. With the training scenario in an interactive 3-D model the user can get information about the functioning and test the handling of prototype casting machines. By transferring important functions and editing the scenarios in a web-based format, the user can get the training methods via internet if required.
